They scream, they cry, they yell and that’s before the monologues begin at a revolutionary acting class that has taken New York City by storm. One of the best kept secrets in the New York City Acting Community for years is now out as accomplished actor Bobbi Berger jams in the students at “The Actor’s Gymnasium” a class taught at various acting schools in New York City.
A veteran stage, television, film, club performer and a member of Equity, Aftra and SAG she has fashioned a cutting edge technique that has created a new 21st century school of acting with remarkable results.
“After one class with Bobbi, one student writes on the Berger’s website, “I got a call back for a Paul Newman movie, the Magic Hour; I booked five feature films and a sitcom”!
How does she do it? “The key is getting to the authentic---the emotion, action, voice, and my technique seem to heal the frozen emotions that usually prevent a breakthrough”, Berger says. One student wrote to Berger that she had no acting parts for a year but after four sessions with Bobbi Berger she landed a national tour.
At first glance an observer feels as if they are in primal scream therapy but soon the connection between these uncommon exercises and an empowered performance exudes. Some class components were based on exercises developed by a cardiologist. “Yes, my students are also staying heart healthy because in the process you are releasing bottled up emotions---and we know today that hardened attitudes leads to harden arteries,” she added. The physical tempo seems to propel an internal enthusiasm under the guidance of a learned but gentle critic. “I am firm but empathetic with my students because life does similar things to all of us both good and bad and actors need to draw from that hurt or pleasure to be genuine.” One of the rules in her audition preparatory class is “No acting please”!!!
“All my life I knew I had the vocal instrument to sing yet I never had the confidence or identification with being a singer and all my teachers said they couldn’t help me but with Bobbi I let it out!” another student writes.
She has heard from other students about similar transformations, “I am brave and honest in my acting’ and “after doubting my passion for the acting profession I am now totally recharged.”
“There is no doubt that getting to the “real” will heal the soul,” Berger says. One of my students wrote about her brother’s suicide and how using the self written monologue as her standard audition piece has landed her roles,” she added. Berger’s website boosts of this red-hot technique that is packing them in through word of mouth in the metropolitan area. Several students come from across the Hudson in New Jersey and as far as upstate Connecticut to learn her successful technique. Another graduate tells “I took a class and performed the exercises myself before an audition and got my first commercial and was hailed by the Director as being “brilliant’ and giving 100 percent more than he asked for.”
Among Berger’s own credits are the feature film Legal Eagles with Robert Redford and Darryl Hannah, made for television movies, Off Broadway principal role performances at the Amateur Comedy Club and Trinity Playhouse. Among her special skills are cartwheels and splits, which she still performed in her mid 50’s until a recent shoulder injury.
